Here’s the thing about visiting New York during the winter months: The holiday dazzle might be gone, but so are the crowds. Museums are blissfully quiet, you can actually get an 8:00 p.m. dinner reservation, and good seats at the opera, the theater, and Carnegie Hall are readily available. Even better, thanks to terrific savings on some of the Big Apple’s spendiest stays, you can banish any winter blahs with a shot of pure extravagance.

1. The Kitano

New York’s first Japanese-owned hotel delivers a soothing dose of zen in Manhattan’s bustling Murray Hill neighborhood. At 18 stories, its upper floors offer unobstructed views of the Empire State Building and Grand Central Terminal. Suites with double beds are great for families and groups of friends, and will allow for plenty of room to spread out. Even better, you won’t have to reserve multiple rooms. Beyond town car service and deep soaking tubs, plush amenities include Japanese “washlet” toilets  no more cold toilet seats  a selection of Japanese teas, and access to nearby New York Sports Clubs. Through the end of March, those who book the non-refundable Winter Savings promotion will save 20 percent on the best available rates (from $259 per night). The promotion takes 15 percent off the regular price, but is fully refundable (rates from $298 per night). To find these offers on the hotel's website, you’ll have to click the "Check Availability" button (it's in the upper right-hand corner of the screen), select your desired dates, and continue to the next page to select an offer.

2. The Ritz-Carlton New York, Central Park

Looking to seriously upgrade your winter weekends? The Ritz-Carlton’s Suite Moments in New York City package ($1,895 per night) begins with a pampering stay in a sleek suite with one-and-a-half baths. It also includes drinks in the Club Lounge overlooking Central Park, as well as exclusive experiences at three additional Manhattan hotels. Enjoy champagne sabering at the St. Regis; post-dinner drinks and a live DJ show at the W New York - Times Square; and cocktails in the lobby bar of the New York EDITION. If you’d prefer to stay closer to your comfortable digs, you may want to consider the Room with a View promotion ($995 per night), which includes breakfast in bed and a $250 spa credit at the hotel’s La Prairie spa. Also through March, take advantage of the Linger Longer package, which starts at $695 per night and allows guests to pay for three nights and stay for four (which decreases the nightly rate to $521 for a four-night stay). A full makeover in 2018 freshened all 308 rooms and suites with calm color schemes and New York-centric art.

3. The Surrey

Hushed and elegant, this Upper East Side grand dame houses a secret: a collection of modern art that includes works by Chuck Close, Claes Oldenburg, Richard Serra, and other famed artists. Although the room service menu is by acclaimed chef Daniel Boulud (whose Café Boulud adjoins the hotel), you’ll want to get out and explore the surrounding neighborhood. Here, you’ll find elegant shops (Christian Louboutin, Gianvito Rossi), museums (The Metropolitan Museum of Art and its sister museum, The Met Breuer), and restaurants (Kappo Masa, Sant Ambroeus). Now is the time to book: winter promotions include room discounts ranging from 15 to 30 percent, and perks such as late check-out, free breakfast, admission to the Met, room upgrades, a $50 hotel credit, and free nights. Rates from $396 per night.

4. Lowell Hotel

Set on the corner of Madison Avenue and East 63rd Street, this privately-owned, jewel-box of a hotel has the look and feel of a Paris pied-à-terre  right down to the art books on the coffee tables and the hand-painted armoires in the guest rooms. Many rooms here have lovely surprises, including wood-burning fireplaces, balconies, and kitchenettes. Call the hotel if you have your heart set on, say, cozying up to a roaring fire on a frigid Friday night. Winter offers include a stay for three nights, pay for two nights special (rates from $450 per night, which decreases to $300 per night with the promotion), and a fireplace package that includes specially scented wood, wine, breakfast, and wifi (rates from $1,215 per night).

5. The Langham

From the glorious Alex Katz mural that dominates the lobby, to the sweeping curved staircase that leads to Michael White’s famed Ai Fiori restaurant, to the floor-to-ceiling windows in each oversized guest room, it’s all about minimalist drama at the Langham Hotel. Located on Fifth Avenue between West 36th and West 37th streets, this hotel’s sleek and contemporary rooms are warmed by curving walnut accents and creamy marble bathrooms. The Swedish Duxiana mattresses will hold you in bed like a magnet. Deals abound, including a free fourth night when you book three nights and stay before February 28 (rates from $334 per night, which decreases to $250 per night for a four-night stay with the promotion); 25 percent off suites (from $582 per night and only valid if you stay before February 28); and an indulgent Romance Getaway package that includes champagne, a $150 hotel credit, chocolate truffles, and other perks (valid from February 8 to February 28; rates from $700 per night). All of the above packages include a 1:00 p.m. check-out, as well as the opportunity to earn frequent flier miles on most major airlines, including American and Delta.

6. Soho Grand Hotel

Book the Winter Escape package at this industrial-chic downtown hotel and you’ll save 20 percent on a deluxe-level room or higher (rates from $244 per night). Stick around for a week, and the hotel will throw in an additional 10 percent off. Lovebirds who book the romantic Ain’t Love Grand package (rates from $269 per night) receive a bottle of bubbles, a bouquet roses, an early check-in, and a late check-out. Lastly, those looking to linger longer in the city can book a four-night (or five-night) stay for 20 percent off (rates from $282 per night). Filled with artwork and decorated in warm golden hues with leather accents, rooms here are cozy and chic. Call ahead and you can have anything from a pet goldfish to a Martin acoustic guitar waiting for you upon arrival.
